Technology: Multi-beam Sonar for Tracking Marine Mammals

Multibeam sonar tracking of marine mammals

Multibeam sonar tracking of marine mammals (Gordon Hastie)

The Sea Mammal Research Unit has developed novel multi-beam sonar techniques to detect and track marine mammals underwater. This is being used to study the diving and foraging behaviour of marine mammals, and as a monitoring tool to track seals and porpoises in three dimensions around tidal turbines.
