Based at the Scottish Oceans Institute, University of St Andrews, we are a small, specialist team at an exciting stage of development \u2014 expanding our range of instruments and growing collaborations across the global research community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Positions within SMRU Instrumentation are employed through <strong>SMRU Consulting<\/strong>, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of St Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instrumentation Technician<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full-time, Permanent &nbsp;|&nbsp; St Andrews, Scotland &nbsp;|&nbsp; Employed by SMRU Consulting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the assembly, encapsulation, and testing of SMRU Instrumentation&#8217;s biologging tags, and for the diagnosis and repair of faults. You will work as part of a small, close-knit production team, building high-value instruments deployed in demanding field conditions on marine animals around the world. Precision and meticulous quality control are fundamental to everything we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This position is open until filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key responsibilities include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assembling and integrating electronic and mechanical tag components to defined build specifications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encapsulating finished assemblies using epoxy resin systems under vacuum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrying out functional and performance testing at all stages of production, including sensor calibration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagnosing and repairing faults at component level, including SMD rework<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining accurate test records and supporting continuous improvement of production processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Essential requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proven practical experience in electronics assembly, including PCB assembly, soldering (surface mount and leaded), and component-level repair<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience using electronic test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to follow technical documentation \u2014 build procedures, test protocols, wiring diagrams \u2014 accurately and consistently<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meticulous attention to detail and a systematic approach to fault-finding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/smru-inst.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk\/files\/2026\/06\/InstrumentationTechnician_JD.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"658\">Download Full Job Description (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply, please send a CV and cover letter to kenady.wilson@st-andrews.ac.uk.
