Based at the Scottish Oceans Institute, University of St Andrews, we are a small, specialist team at an exciting stage of development \u2014 expanding our range of instruments and growing collaborations across the global research community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Positions within SMRU Instrumentation are employed through <strong>SMRU Consulting<\/strong>, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of St Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Scientist &amp; Technical Support Specialist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Full-time, Permanent &nbsp;|&nbsp; Scottish Oceans Institute, St Andrews &nbsp;|&nbsp; Employed by SMRU Consulting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a new post created to strengthen the interface between SMRU Instrumentation&#8217;s engineering capability and its scientific user base. The Research Scientist is the primary point of contact for tag users worldwide \u2014 managing customer relationships from initial order through to deployment support and publication \u2014 while maintaining an active research profile in biotelemetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This position is open until filled with an ideal start date of 7 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key responsibilities include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monitoring data quality across active tag deployments and developing analysis protocols and tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing expert advice to end-users on data analysis, processing, and interpretation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing customer relationships from enquiry through deployment and post-deployment follow-up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributing to research publications and representing SMRU Instrumentation at international conferences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leading the group&#8217;s social media presence and community outreach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Essential requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PhD in marine biology, ecology, oceanography, or a closely related field, with substantial involvement in animal telemetry or biologging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrated ability to analyse telemetry datasets and develop analysis tools or workflows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a track record of scientific publication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong organisational skills and experience managing multiple concurrent projects and stakeholders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smru-inst.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk\/files\/2026\/06\/ResearchScientistTechSupport_JD.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"659\">Download Full Job Description (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instrumentation Technician<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Full-time, Permanent &nbsp;|&nbsp; St Andrews, Scotland &nbsp;|&nbsp; Employed by SMRU Consulting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the assembly, encapsulation, and testing of SMRU Instrumentation&#8217;s biologging tags, and for the diagnosis and repair of faults. You will work as part of a small, close-knit production team, building high-value instruments deployed in demanding field conditions on marine animals around the world.
